Teacher training diploma
The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) is the largest Yoga organisation in the UK and is the Governing Body of Yoga in the UK appointed by the Sports Council. Its role is to ensure the safe teaching of yoga and it offers courses from Foundation level to teacher training and continuing professional development.
The BWY Teaching Diploma is probably the most widely accepted yoga teaching qualification in the UK and is the requirement for teaching yoga at many institutions. It also gains you entry onto the Register of Fitness Professionals (Reps) which is a requirement for teaching in health and fitness clubs and leisure centres. Download an application form.
Why the BWY Diploma?
The BWY does not have a prescribed or set style. The approach to teaching asana allows you to teach safely with the understanding and ability to adapt and modify postures to deal with a range of common (and indeed uncommon) medical conditions. In other words you will have the skills to teach real people in the real world! Alongside this is the progressive development of skill in teaching pranayama, relaxation, meditation, mantra, philosophy and so on. As a BWY qualified teacher you will be free to develop your own style of teaching and for that style to alter and shift as you gain more experience and develop new ideas. You will be qualified to teach all levels of physical ability from ‘stiff’ beginners to athletes alike.
You will also find that the depth of study in aspects such as pranayama and meditation will allow you to grow personally as well as being able to teach these very important aspects of yoga with real understanding.
Course content
The Diploma course covers many aspects of yoga in great detail including:

Students are encouraged to begin teaching their own classes by the end of the first year to support their studies with practical experience. They will be insured to teach as a BWY Student Teacher.
The course also requires extensive home study and research and the completion of written assignments.
